Day #20: I got news! 📰

Finally living my writing life

Honesty corner: I went to American Literature today. We had to read an interesting piece from “American Indian Stories” by the Native American author Zitkala-Sa. We discussed it in class, sharing different perspectives about elements of the chapters that were assigned. Throughout those two hours, a few of my classmates mentioned elements of American culture that I didn’t know. This made me feel terrible about myself, like I was behind everyone else for being a foreigner and having this big disadvantage. It took me a bit of time (and Carl on the phone) to realize that this is exactly why I’m here: to learn more about American literature and culture, and to get to learn things I couldn’t learn anywere else. Sure, I don’t know everything about American culture like a person who was born and raised in the States, but I have my own knowledge to share and utilize during these classes.

Outside university classes, among so many other things, NCSU also has a student newspaper launched on February 1st 1920, called Technician. It comes out on Thursdays and it has four different sections: news, culture, opinion and sports.
After a few hours of break, I went to the its headquarters, on the 3rd floor of Witherspoon Student Center, to talk to its editor-in-chief to be a part of it. Quite impulsively after the chat, I stayed for the culture section meeting and already picked up my first article. On Friday, I’m going to an improve comedy show happening on campus and then I’ll write about it for next week’s issue. I’m so excited to write my very firrst journalistic article! Before getting paid for the job, I need to write 6 articles, of which at least one in news and one in culture. I’m just excited to get the chance to write for it.

Momento di sincerità: Oggi sono andata al corso di Letteratura Americana. Dovevamo leggere un brano molto interessante tratto da “American Indian Stories” dell'autrice nativa americana Zitkala-Sa. Ne abbiamo discusso in classe, condividendo diverse prospettive su parti dei capitoli assegnati. Nel corso delle due ore, alcuni dei miei compagni di corso hanno menzionato elementi della cultura americana che io non conoscevo. Questo mi ha fatta sentire un po’ male con me stessa, come se fossi indietro rispetto a tutti gli altri per il fatto di essere straniera e di avere un grande svantaggio. Mi ci è voluto un po' di tempo (e Carl al telefono) per capire che questo è esattamente il motivo per cui sono qui: imparare di più sulla letteratura e sulla cultura americane e scoprire cose che non potrei imparare altrove. Certo, non so tutto sulla cultura americana come una persona che è nata e cresciuta negli Stati Uniti, ma ho le mie conoscenze da condividere e utilizzare durante questi corsi.

Al di fuori dei corsi universitari, tra le tante cose, la NCSU ha anche un giornale studentesco lanciato il 1° febbraio 1920, chiamato Technician. Esce il giovedì e ha quattro sezioni diverse: notizie, cultura, opinioni e sport. Dopo qualche ora di pausa, sono andata alla sua sede al terzo piano del Witherspoon Student Center per parlare con la sua caporedattrice per farne parte. Dopo la nostra chiacchierata, sono rimasta per la riunione della sezione cultura e ho impulsivamente già preso il mio primo articolo. Venerdì andrò a uno spettacolo di improvvisazione che si terrà all’università e poi ne scriverò per il numero della prossima settimana. Sono così emozionata di scrivere il mio primo articolo giornalistico! Prima di essere pagata per il lavoro, devo scrivere 6 articoli, di cui almeno uno di cronaca e uno di cultura. Non vedo l'ora di avere la possibilità di scrivere per questo giornale.
